FutureB-
The Patriots bet the future on Maye. The board says B-. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. On value alone, McClellan makes the weekend a net positive.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker at the 34th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
By-the-book stuff, Javon Bullard at slot 68 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick103
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
They did well to land Kamal Hadden in pick No. 139, just ahead of his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick182
Rnd6
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten slid further than he should have, and pick 182 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
A quiet steal in No. 224: Jase McClellan for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
