Draft Grade — Bears
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureD+
A franchise passer in Williams headlines a F weekend for the Bears.

The Bears did not so much draft Trajan Jeffcoat as overpay for him, 114 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.

With interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on OLB-EDGE is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Owens. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In the 1st overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
Pick9 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In slot 9 they get a true top target, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick17 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In the 17th pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick75 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
They took Sedrick Van Pran at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick96 Rnd3 Trey Benson
Trey Benson at pick No. 96 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at Round 4, Pick 11 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick123 Rnd4 Javon Solomon
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots open.
Pick137 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
A big swing on Luke McCaffrey at slot 137, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick143 Rnd5 Dallin Holker
A conviction pick on Dallin Holker at the 143rd pick that the board grades a round light. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick189 Rnd6 Trajan Jeffcoat
They reached a country mile for Trajan Jeffcoat at the 189th overall pick, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick207 Rnd6 Jowon Briggs
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jowon Briggs this early at the Round 6 slot. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick224 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
A straight-up fair deal on Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 224, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick234 Rnd7 Jordan Whittington
Jordan Whittington in Round 7, Pick 14 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240 Rnd7 Jalen Coker
Value said wait; Jalen Coker in No. 240 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick241 Rnd7 David Ugwoegbu
A real head-scratcher, David Ugwoegbu in pick 241 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick247 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens in the 247th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
