Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedB-

FutureA+
McCarthy is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a B+. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They will need Bortolini to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In pick No. 4 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick18
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In No. 18 they get a No. 1 receiver, though they paid up to get him.
Pick27
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jackson Powers-Johnson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick30
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
By-the-book stuff, J.J. McCarthy at pick 30 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick97
Rnd3
Mason McCormick
They talked themselves into Mason McCormick at Round 3, Pick 34, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick134
Rnd4
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at slot 134 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick163
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
Khristian Boyd at the 163rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick165
Rnd5
Myles Cole
Myles Cole at the 165th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
