Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent the 131st pick on Jaylen Harrell, a name the board had a full 77 spots lower. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Getting McGlothern where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In pick 31 they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
They jumped the gun on Sedrick Van Pran, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A reach for Maason Smith in the 94th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
They did well to land Blake Fisher in pick No. 124, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jaylen Harrell
Value said wait; Jaylen Harrell in slot 131 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick174
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Value with a capital V on Tykee Smith in No. 174, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick176
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at pick 176 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick211
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick215
Rnd6
Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy is a better player than No. 215 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick233
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus in slot 233 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick251
Rnd7
KT Leveston
They let KT Leveston come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 31. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
