Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a D-.

There is reaching, and then there is Tyler Baron at No. 155. The Texans jumped the board by 41 and dared it to prove them wrong. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.

Dart falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Kevin Winston Jr.
In pick 28 they get a ballhawk on the back end. Need was not the driver here.
Pick41 Rnd2 Ollie Gordon II
A tidy little value on Ollie Gordon II in slot 41, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick42 Rnd2 Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter at the 42nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick56 Rnd2 Shavon Revel Jr.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Shavon Revel Jr.. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick60 Rnd2 T.J. Sanders
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for T.J. Sanders. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick88 Rnd3 Jaxson Dart
Somehow Jaxson Dart was still sitting there in the 88th overall pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick89 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson is a better player than pick No. 89 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick90 Rnd3 Deion Burks
They did well to land Deion Burks in slot 90, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick120 Rnd4 Josh Simmons
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 120th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Pick155 Rnd5 Tyler Baron
Tyler Baron in the 155th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216 Rnd7 Dane Key
They paid sticker price for Dane Key in pick 216, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
