Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall C-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC
The Chiefs got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C-.

The DeMonte Capehart pick is the one that will follow the Chiefs into the fall. They took him 87 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The veteran additions, Ikem Ekwonu chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

If Xavier Worthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Xavier Worthy
In slot 31 they get a true top target, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63 Rnd2 Roman Wilson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Roman Wilson this early at the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick101 Rnd4 Jalen McMillan
Somehow Jalen McMillan was still sitting there in the 101st pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131 Rnd4 Beau Brade
Steal is underselling it; Beau Brade at Round 4, Pick 31 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick164 Rnd5 LaDarius Henderson
No drama and no debate, LaDarius Henderson went about where he belonged in pick No. 164. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick169 Rnd5 Kris Abrams-Draine
Taking Kris Abrams-Draine in the 169th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick171 Rnd5 Trey Knox
They went early on Trey Knox in Round 5, Pick 35, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III is a better player than the 180th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick188 Rnd6 DeMonte Capehart
They talked themselves into DeMonte Capehart at slot 188, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick209 Rnd6 Christian Jones
A slide stopped in No. 209, with Christian Jones worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216 Rnd6 Austin Stogner
Value with a capital V on Austin Stogner in pick No. 216, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick221 Rnd7 Myles Jones
Good price on Myles Jones in the 221st overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick222 Rnd7 Erick All
They did well to land Erick All in pick 222, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick225 Rnd7 Taulia Tagovailoa
They paid sticker price for Taulia Tagovailoa in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick229 Rnd7 Zakhari Franklin
Zakhari Franklin at pick No. 229 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick239 Rnd7 Jaden Crumedy
Nothing to complain about; Jaden Crumedy went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick248 Rnd7 Mark Perry
A tidy little value on Mark Perry in the 248th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick252 Rnd7 Donovan Jennings
Donovan Jennings at Round 7, Pick 32 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick255 Rnd7 Daequan Hardy
Daequan Hardy in pick 255 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick256 Rnd7 Steele Chambers
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 256 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
