The Steelers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Steelers spent slot 235 on Solomon Tuliaupupu, a name the board had a full 79 spots lower. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Steelers indulged a want in Miller while a need in running back and tight end stayed open.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In the 21st overall pick they get a true top target at fair value.
Pick60
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
A clean, defensible pick in No. 60 with a little surplus value in Elijah Sarratt. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick76
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Michael Taaffe at slot 76 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick90
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
Circle this one: A'Mauri Washington at pick 90 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the 99th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick127
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
A conviction pick on J.C. Davis at the 127th pick that the board grades a round light. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick129
Rnd4
Cade Klubnik
They barely believed it either: Cade Klubnik still on the board at pick 129. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick133
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson slid further than he should have, and the 133rd overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. The roster fit checks out.
Pick137
Rnd4
Blake Miller
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Running back and tight end needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Blake Miller did not.
Pick160
Rnd5
Kage Casey
No drama and no debate, Kage Casey went about where he belonged in slot 160. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick212
Rnd6
Gracen Halton
They read the board right and Gracen Halton was the payoff at pick No. 212. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick213
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Zuhn III in No. 213, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick218
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at Round 7, Pick 4 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick235
Rnd7
Solomon Tuliaupupu
Solomon Tuliaupupu at the 235th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jerry Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Jerry Wilson at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick245
Rnd7
Jordan White
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan White. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick257
Rnd7
Haynes King
Haynes King in the 257th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
