Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Panthers won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Phillip Webb, 99 picks early at slot 227. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Belton. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but linebacker.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
Tetairoa McMillan at pick 12 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick44
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Nice patience on Malaki Starks, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 12. The roster fit checks out.
Pick58
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery is a better player than the 58th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Good price on Jayden Higgins in pick No. 74, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick111
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A real head-scratcher, Antwaun Powell-Ryland in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Elijah Roberts
Elijah Roberts at No. 114 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140
Rnd5
Fadil Diggs
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Fadil Diggs well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick146
Rnd5
Dorian Strong
A reach for Dorian Strong in the 146th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten slid further than he should have, and the 163rd overall pick is lovely value for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
Pick166
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
Steal is underselling it; Anthony Belton at pick 166 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick188
Rnd6
Hayden Conner
They reached a country mile for Hayden Conner at Round 6, Pick 12, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick227
Rnd7
Phillip Webb
Value said wait; Phillip Webb in No. 227 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
