FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Panthers. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Panthers shredded theirs for Oronde Gadsden II. He came off 47 spots early, and the room will hear about it. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
With cornerback, safety and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on interior defensive lineman is the choice that costs them. The Grant pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick 8 they get an anchor for the defensive front, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
Pick57
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
Nothing to complain about; Donovan Ezeiruaku went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger in slot 76 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick111
Rnd4
Charles Grant
Taking Charles Grant in No. 111 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
A curious use of the 114th overall pick. Cornerback, safety and other spots needed the pick; an interior defensive lineman in Joshua Farmer did not.
Pick140
Rnd5
Mitchell Evans
They took Mitchell Evans at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick146
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
They reached a country mile for Oronde Gadsden II at No. 146, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick163
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 163 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
