Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Commanders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D+.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They will answer for taking TE-EDGE early while tight end went begging.

For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for Jefferson left real value on the table behind him.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Drake Maye
Drake Maye at pick 5 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick36 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
A quiet steal in No. 36: Keon Coleman for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick37 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
No drama and no debate, Chop Robinson went about where he belonged in slot 37. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick40 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
They took Tyler Guyton at par in Round 2, Pick 8, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jonathon Brooks
A tidy little value on Jonathon Brooks in the 67th pick, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
The board had Jeremiah Trotter Jr. higher than pick No. 69, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94 Rnd3 Cade Stover
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with tight end open.
Pick101 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in the 101st overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
Value with a capital V on Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 3, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick139 Rnd5 James Williams
A reasonable price with a little left over, James Williams in pick No. 139. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick155 Rnd5 Keith Randolph Jr.
Keith Randolph Jr. at pick 155 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Pick166 Rnd5 Jordan Jefferson
Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick181 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in No. 181 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick211 Rnd6 De'Corian Clark
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing De'Corian Clark in the 211th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick220 Rnd6 Myles Jones
Myles Jones at slot 220 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick256 Rnd7 Tatum Bethune
No edge and no loss on Tatum Bethune in the 256th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
