Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA- FutureD-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Steelers: C+.

The Maason Smith pick is the one that will follow the Steelers into the fall. They took him 26 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while quarterback, safety and other spots went begging. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

If Terrion Arnold and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Terrion Arnold
In the Round 1 slot they get an island corner. A real need, handled.
Pick66 Rnd3 Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall at pick 66 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick71 Rnd3 Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil in Round 3, Pick 7 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick84 Rnd3 Maason Smith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Maason Smith. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick90 Rnd3 Mekhi Wingo
They paid a round early for Mekhi Wingo in the 90th pick, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the 98th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick115 Rnd4 Christian Jones
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Christian Jones at offensive lineman with quarterback, safety and other spots open.
Pick119 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
No drama and no debate, Johnny Wilson went about where he belonged in the 119th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
