Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Cowboys robbed the room for Ransom. Final grade: A-.

The rest of the league will want that one back. Lathan Ransom tumbling to the Cowboys in Round 4, Pick 31 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.

The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Walter Nolen and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In No. 26 they get a wrecking ball inside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick63 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the 63rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick117 Rnd4 Tez Johnson
They read the board right and Tez Johnson was the payoff at slot 117. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick122 Rnd4 Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton slid further than he should have, and pick 122 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick133 Rnd4 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in Round 4, Pick 31 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick149 Rnd5 Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard at pick No. 149 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171 Rnd5 Willie Lampkin
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Willie Lampkin. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick174 Rnd5 Elijah Roberts
Elijah Roberts at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick204 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at pick No. 204 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211 Rnd6 Joshua Gray
Joshua Gray at the 211th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick239 Rnd7 Bilhal Kone
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bilhal Kone in pick 239. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick247 Rnd7 Mac McWilliams
Fair-plus on Mac McWilliams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick257 Rnd7 Tonka Hemingway
No drama and no debate, Tonka Hemingway went about where he belonged in No. 257. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
