Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB+
The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a D to match.

The Commanders lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.

Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. They will need Cephus to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Colson.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In the 2nd pick they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 40. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick44 Rnd2 Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice in pick No. 44 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick67 Rnd3 Zach Frazier
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in the 67th overall pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Khyree Jackson a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100 Rnd3 Junior Colson
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 100 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick102 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves in No. 102 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
They paid up for Ben Sinnott at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132 Rnd4 MarShawn Lloyd
By-the-book stuff, MarShawn Lloyd at pick 132 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick141 Rnd5 Tommy Eichenberg
The board had Tommy Eichenberg higher than the 141st overall pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick142 Rnd5 James Williams
James Williams is a better player than Round 5, Pick 6 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick181 Rnd6 Trey Knox
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Knox. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick184 Rnd6 Layden Robinson
Layden Robinson at pick No. 184 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick223 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
The board had cheaper options than Joshua Cephus at slot 223, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
