Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
C-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureC-
The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a C- to match. The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C-.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Commanders indulged a want in Stover while a need in tight end and running back stayed open.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Hit on Drake Maye and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In pick 5 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick13
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 36 with a little surplus value in Brian Thomas Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick37
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
The board had Jordan Morgan higher than slot 37, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick40
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at the 67th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick77
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
They did well to land Payton Wilson in the 77th pick, just ahead of his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick100
Rnd3
Cade Stover
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in No. 100 leaves tight end and running back for later.
Pick102
Rnd4
Tykee Smith
Good price on Tykee Smith in the 102nd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick141
Rnd5
Cam Hart
They read the board right and Cam Hart was the payoff at No. 141. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
They took Zakhari Franklin at par in the 223rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
