Draft Grade — Bears
Overall

FutureA+
The Bears robbed the room for Wiley. Final grade: A-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Bears were there to profit. Michael Wiley, the No. 190 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 228. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
The veteran additions, Zack Moss chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
No edge and no loss on Rome Odunze in slot 11; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick15
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the 15th overall pick they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at Round 2, Pick 20 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They took Cooper Beebe at par in the 75th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick110
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves at the Round 4 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The roster fit checks out.
Pick117
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
A tidy little value on Leonard Taylor III in pick 117, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122
Rnd4
Max Melton
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Max Melton at No. 122 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick146
Rnd5
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick No. 146 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick196
Rnd6
Javon Baker
Javon Baker is a better player than Round 6, Pick 21 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick228
Rnd7
Michael Wiley
They robbed the room for Michael Wiley here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick241
Rnd7
Phil Jurkovec
A reasonable price with a little left over, Phil Jurkovec in pick 241. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
