Gray should have been long gone. The Saints pounced, and earned a B. When a board-topper like Cedric Gray slides to the 152nd overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Saints did not. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
JC Latham
In No. 21 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick53
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Xavier Worthy at Round 2, Pick 21 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick61
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
Fair-plus on Jonah Elliss, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in pick No. 99. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick136
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson slid further than he should have, and the 136th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick152
Rnd5
Cedric Gray
Taking Cedric Gray in pick 152 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick170
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
A tidy little value on Chau Smith-Wade in the 170th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick176
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
No edge and no loss on Josh Proctor in slot 176; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick205
Rnd6
Bryson Nesbit
Bryson Nesbit in pick 205 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
