cappy DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B. For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Patriots walked out of the weekend still thin at edge rusher, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
Getting Thieneman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Chaplin pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dillon Thieneman at the 62nd overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Xavier Chaplin
They liked Xavier Chaplin enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 30. The roster fit checks out.
Pick129
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in pick 129 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick130
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance in No. 130 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick169
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
By-the-book stuff, Aaron Graves at slot 169 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
