Christeca DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. The 49ers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 4, Pick 25 on Joe Milton III a full 74 spots early.
That Dixon pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and edge rusher still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In the 31st overall pick they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 63 with a little surplus value in Kingsley Suamataia. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in slot 94 leaves interior defensive lineman and edge rusher for later.
Pick98
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at the 98th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick125
Rnd4
Joe Milton III
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at No. 125, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick132
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
A straight-up fair deal on Theo Johnson at Round 4, Pick 32, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick176
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
They paid sticker price for Ty'Ron Hopper in No. 176, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick209
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Frank Gore Jr. at Round 6, Pick 34, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick214
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Andrew Raym. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick215
Rnd6
Johnny Dixon
They barely believed it either: Johnny Dixon still on the board at the 215th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick249
Rnd7
Sheridan Jones
Sheridan Jones slid further than he should have, and pick No. 249 is lovely value for the cornerback. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
