No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Panthers.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Panthers did exactly that with Patrick Payton in slot 198. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.

In No. 19 they get a home-run threat at receiver, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.

A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 156th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.

A big swing on Red Murdock at pick No. 157, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.

A real head-scratcher, Patrick Payton in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
