Jayarea24 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall

FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D-. The 49ers spent real capital to be 57 picks early on Trajan Jeffcoat, and the board is going to hold them to it.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Jones pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Latham pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In slot 31 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
A conviction pick on Ruke Orhorhoro at the 60th overall pick that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick63
Rnd2
Mike Sainristil
A reach on Mike Sainristil in the 63rd pick; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A premium they did not need to pay, Zak Zinter a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in pick No. 124 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick128
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at pick No. 128 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jarrian Jones while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
Value said wait; Jaheim Bell in pick 133 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
A clean, defensible pick in slot 144 with a little surplus value in Jaylin Simpson. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick160
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
By-the-book stuff, Tykee Smith at No. 160 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jase McClellan
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jase McClellan this early at the Round 5 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Javion Cohen
Fair-plus on Javion Cohen, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
They did well to land Jaylan Ford in the 211th pick, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
A real head-scratcher, Andrew Raym in slot 215 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick251
Rnd7
Trajan Jeffcoat
Trajan Jeffcoat at the 251st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
