Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA-
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B+.

The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

The cost of the Cohen reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

On value alone, Thrash makes the weekend a net positive.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In pick 4 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value.
Pick27 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In slot 27 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Pick35 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick No. 35 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick71 Rnd3 D.J. James
D.J. James slid further than he should have, and the 71st pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick85 Rnd3 Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving in the 85th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick110 Rnd4 Jamari Thrash
Taking Jamari Thrash in Round 4, Pick 10 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick122 Rnd4 Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen at No. 122 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick123 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at No. 123 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick146 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Theo Johnson. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick248 Rnd7 Maurice Smith
Maurice Smith in slot 248 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
