Jayarea24 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. Of all the ways to open, the 49ers chose the head-scratcher, spending No. 124 on Elijah Jones with wide receiver, running back and other spots still wide open. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. Eboigbe has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McGlothern.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In pick No. 31 they get a long-term starter on the line, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in pick 63 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
By-the-book stuff, Caelen Carson at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick124
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Elijah Jones while clear needs at wide receiver, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick131
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 131 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick133
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
The board had cheaper options than Justin Eboigbe at Round 4, Pick 33, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern slipping to the 176th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Fair-plus on Jaylan Ford, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick215
Rnd6
Evan Williams
No edge and no loss on Evan Williams in the 215th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick251
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
They paid a round early for Matthew Jones in the Round 7 slot, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
