Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D-.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The 49ers took Jaheim Bell at pick 133, roughly 33 spots before his name belonged.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Abrams-Draine pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

Landing Newton that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
A slide stopped in the Round 1 slot, with Chop Robinson worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick36 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at pick 36 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick40 Rnd2 Kamari Lassiter
By-the-book stuff, Kamari Lassiter at No. 40 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick63 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
Nice patience on Xavier Worthy, who had no business lasting to pick No. 63. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
They paid sticker price for Sedrick Van Pran in slot 67, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick78 Rnd3 Kris Abrams-Draine
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 14. Quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in Kris Abrams-Draine did not.
Pick94 Rnd3 Trey Benson
Good price on Trey Benson in slot 94, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in pick No. 100. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124 Rnd4 Tyler Davis
Fair-plus on Tyler Davis, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131 Rnd4 Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten in the 131st overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in pick 133 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick139 Rnd5 Josh Newton
You do not let a cornerback like Josh Newton reach No. 139 and blink. They did not. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick152 Rnd5 Tykee Smith
A conviction pick on Tykee Smith at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick176 Rnd6 Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at Round 6, Pick 1 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick211 Rnd6 Caedan Wallace
They took Caedan Wallace at par in slot 211, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jordan Magee
Jordan Magee at pick 215 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick251 Rnd7 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor in pick No. 251 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
