Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Texans and Greenfield: D+. The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will need Ford to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Greenfield at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at slot 42 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
They let Kris Jenkins come to them and pounced at No. 59. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss at the 86th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick123
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
No edge and no loss on Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 23; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick127
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
A conviction pick on Jaylan Ford at the 188th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick247
Rnd7
Garret Greenfield
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 247th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick248
Rnd7
Sheridan Jones
Taking Sheridan Jones in No. 248 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jalen Sundell
Fair-plus on Jalen Sundell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jalen Coker
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 256 with a little surplus value in Jalen Coker. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick257
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
The board had cheaper options than Joshua Cephus at pick 257, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
