Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureC-
The Cowboys won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B. The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Kamran James at slot 221 regardless, 40 picks early. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Mesidor pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman still on the board.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
David Bailey
In the 12th overall pick they get juice off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
Pick26
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
In pick 26 they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick46
Rnd2
CJ Allen
Nice patience on CJ Allen, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick60
Rnd2
Akheem Mesidor
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Akheem Mesidor in slot 60 leaves interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick77
Rnd3
Emmett Johnson
They paid up for Emmett Johnson at pick No. 77 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick112
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at Round 4, Pick 12 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick116
Rnd4
Jakobe Thomas
They went early on Jakobe Thomas in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick150
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst at Round 5, Pick 12 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd5
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton at slot 177 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jack Velling
They liked Jack Velling enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 215. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick221
Rnd7
Kamran James
Kamran James at pick No. 221 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick225
Rnd7
Ahmaad Moses
Ahmaad Moses in pick 225 is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
