Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueC NeedB TradesC- FutureC+
A mixed bag for the Patriots, and a C+ to match.

The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 246th overall pick on Demon Clowney a full 170 spots early. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. It is not that Rodriguez is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.

That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Carnell Tate
In No. 30 they get a true top target, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick73 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in pick No. 73 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
They paid a round early for Harold Perkins Jr. in the 94th pick, more than the board wanted. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick130 Rnd4 Jacob Rodriguez
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jacob Rodriguez adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman and quarterback untouched.
Pick131 Rnd4 Blake Miller
No edge and no loss on Blake Miller in Round 4, Pick 31; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick170 Rnd5 Kevin Coleman Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Kevin Coleman Jr. at slot 170 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick192 Rnd6 Jaydn Ott
Jaydn Ott at the 192nd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick193 Rnd6 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick203 Rnd6 Trebor Pena
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trebor Pena. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209 Rnd6 Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun in pick No. 209 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick245 Rnd7 Barion Brown
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Barion Brown. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick246 Rnd7 Demon Clowney
Demon Clowney at the 246th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick247 Rnd7 Mitchell Melton
They talked themselves into Mitchell Melton at slot 247, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick251 Rnd7 Tunmise Adeleye
Tunmise Adeleye at Round 7, Pick 36 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252 Rnd7 Alex Birchmeier
Alex Birchmeier at slot 252 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick257 Rnd7 Da'Shawn Womack
They left a pile of value on the table to take Da'Shawn Womack this early at pick No. 257. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
