FutureB+
A franchise passer in Mendoza headlines a B+ weekend for the Raiders. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Fernando Mendoza is the Raiders' quarterback, full stop.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Landing Banks that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
They are betting Miller proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 2nd overall pick they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
No edge and no loss on Sonny Styles in pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick45
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
A edge rusher of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick72
Rnd3
Max Klare
A quiet steal in the 72nd pick: Max Klare for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick102
Rnd4
Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette slipping to slot 102 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick103
Rnd4
Blake Miller
They liked Blake Miller enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 103. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick110
Rnd4
Deion Burks
Deion Burks at Round 4, Pick 10 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick115
Rnd4
Bishop Fitzgerald
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bishop Fitzgerald in No. 115. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick117
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
A straight-up fair deal on Chase Bisontis at No. 117, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick134
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in slot 134 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick152
Rnd5
Terion Stewart
Terion Stewart at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Pick174
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the 174th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick180
Rnd6
Isaiah Nwokobia
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Nwokobia at pick No. 180 squarely in line with his ranking. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick183
Rnd6
Bud Clark
A clean, defensible pick in pick 183 with a little surplus value in Bud Clark. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick219
Rnd7
Isaac Smith
They took Isaac Smith at par in Round 7, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
