Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall

ValueB+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Cowboys worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Seth McLaughlin at slot 170, roughly 64 spots before his name belonged. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Cornelius. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In pick 17 they get a three-down runner, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick49
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
Value with a capital V on Tyleik Williams in the 49th overall pick, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Pick55
Rnd2
Isaiah Bond
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Bond at No. 55, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick76
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Donovan Jackson a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick86
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
Nice patience on Maxwell Hairston, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick118
Rnd4
Barrett Carter
Circle this one: Barrett Carter at pick No. 118 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick150
Rnd5
Will Howard
Taking Will Howard in the 150th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick170
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
They reached a country mile for Seth McLaughlin at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
The board fumbled Ajani Cornelius all the way to Round 5, Pick 33, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in pick 174 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick183
Rnd6
LaJohntay Wester
LaJohntay Wester at No. 183 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick190
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
They read the board right and JJ Pegues was the payoff at the 190th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 211, where Jack Kiser graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick249
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
They will replay Trevor Etienne at slot 249 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
