FutureB
More right than wrong for the Cowboys, and a B- to prove it. Nobody else had Gino Garcia anywhere near pick 247. The Cowboys did, by 54 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Pierce value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In pick 12 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick66
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at pick No. 66 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jack Bech
Jack Bech is a better player than slot 76 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick82
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They took Danny Stutsman at par in the 82nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick149
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce in Round 5, Pick 11 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jonah Monheim
No drama and no debate, Jonah Monheim went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
Nazir Stackhouse
Nazir Stackhouse at Round 5, Pick 36 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick204
Rnd6
Alex Mastromanno
They talked themselves into Alex Mastromanno at pick No. 204, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick211
Rnd6
Kobe Hudson
A straight-up fair deal on Kobe Hudson at slot 211, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick226
Rnd7
Craig Woodson
A quiet steal in the 226th pick: Craig Woodson for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick239
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
Good price on Bilhal Kone in pick 239, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Gino Garcia. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
