Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureA+
The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Mitchell Evans in No. 106. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A to show for it.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Higgins pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Mason Graham
In pick No. 12 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emeka Egbuka
The board had Emeka Egbuka higher than pick 38, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69 Rnd3 TreVeyon Henderson
They let TreVeyon Henderson come to them and pounced at the 69th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ashton Gillotte
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ashton Gillotte this early at the Round 3 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106 Rnd4 Mitchell Evans
Value said wait; Mitchell Evans in Round 4, Pick 4 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144 Rnd5 Mello Dotson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mello Dotson in No. 144. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick149 Rnd5 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in pick 149 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick171 Rnd5 Luke Kandra
They read the board right and Luke Kandra was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 33. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick220 Rnd7 Kobe Hudson
No edge and no loss on Kobe Hudson in slot 220; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick238 Rnd7 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
