Draft Grade — Saints

FutureC
The Saints left with their quarterback, and a D- to match. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Saints spent pick 190 on Josh Wallace, a name most had 61 spots down the list. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
A reasonable price with a little left over, Olumuyiwa Fashanu in Round 1, Pick 11. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick23
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 23 they get the arm they will build around at fair value.
Pick36
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Nice patience on Brian Thomas Jr., who had no business lasting to the 36th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick45
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
A conviction pick on Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 2 slot that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
The board had cheaper options than Mike Sainristil at pick 67, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick78
Rnd3
Blake Corum
Blake Corum at the 78th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick150
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
No edge and no loss on Luke McCaffrey in the 150th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
A wild overpay on Jaylan Ford in pick 175, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick190
Rnd6
Josh Wallace
Josh Wallace at pick No. 190 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick239
Rnd7
Michael Barrett
Fair-plus on Michael Barrett, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
