The Saints cashed the board's mistake on Hadden: F. The tape said wait; the Saints did not. Mike Sainristil went at Round 2, Pick 13, a good 30 picks before the board was ready.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. On value alone, Hadden makes the weekend a net positive.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick 11 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick26
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In the 26th pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
They talked themselves into Xavier Worthy at the Round 2 slot, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick40
Rnd2
Bo Nix
Bo Nix in the 40th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick45
Rnd2
Mike Sainristil
A wild overpay on Mike Sainristil in No. 45, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick90
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick104
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
They took Mekhi Wingo at par in Round 4, Pick 4, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick150
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at the 150th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick168
Rnd5
Trevor Keegan
The board fumbled Trevor Keegan all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick199
Rnd6
Kamal Hadden
Taking Kamal Hadden in the 199th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick220
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid sticker price for Frank Gore Jr. in slot 220, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick239
Rnd7
Josh Wallace
They went early on Josh Wallace in pick 239, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
