FutureA
The Patriots let Mbow fall into their laps, and walked away with a A-. You could see the war room lean forward. Marcus Mbow at pick No. 106 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Conner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Tetairoa McMillan and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In pick No. 17 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker slid further than he should have, and No. 38 is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick49
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
They will replay Colston Loveland at the Round 2 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins slipping to Round 3, Pick 5 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
A wild overpay on Ashton Gillotte in the 77th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick106
Rnd4
Marcus Mbow
Steal is underselling it; Marcus Mbow at pick 106 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in the 144th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick153
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
They did well to land Trevor Etienne in slot 153, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171
Rnd5
Tommi Hill
Tommi Hill at pick 171 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick220
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson in the 220th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick238
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Conner in Round 7, Pick 22 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
