Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
D-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureC+
The Texans lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. Nobody had Keilan Robinson this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 121 spots to get him at pick No. 188. Put together, it is a D-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The veteran additions, Jalen Ramsey chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. However the rest shakes out, Wilson at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in the 42nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick43
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick44
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 44 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
They took Kingsley Suamataia at par in slot 59, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick63
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro in the 63rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick66
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick123
Rnd4
Michael Pratt
The board had cheaper options than Michael Pratt at pick No. 123, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick127
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at the 127th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick139
Rnd5
Sataoa Laumea
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Sataoa Laumea at slot 139. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick188
Rnd6
Keilan Robinson
A big swing on Keilan Robinson at Round 6, Pick 13, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jalen Coker
A straight-up fair deal on Jalen Coker at pick 247, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
