FutureA+
Quarterback settled, Maye in the fold, and a A- for the Patriots. The Taulia Tagovailoa selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 75 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They banked enough surplus on Watson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, with Drake Maye leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Drake Maye
They paid sticker price for Drake Maye in No. 8, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick35
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Brian Thomas Jr. at pick 35 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
A straight-up fair deal on Kris Jenkins at the 43rd pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick68
Rnd3
Kamari Lassiter
A tidy bit of business in the 68th overall pick, where Kamari Lassiter graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick103
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Roger Rosengarten. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick137
Rnd5
Nehemiah Pritchett
Nehemiah Pritchett at Round 5, Pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick143
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in pick 143 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Dylan Laube
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dylan Laube at No. 180. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick193
Rnd6
Nathan Thomas
Nathan Thomas in pick No. 193 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick226
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson at slot 226 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick231
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Taulia Tagovailoa. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
