Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Kedon Slovis at pick No. 247 is 58 spots clear of where he belonged. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The 49ers indulged a want in Solomon while a need in edge rusher and linebacker stayed open.

They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 JC Latham
In the 17th overall pick they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick41 Rnd2 Christian Haynes
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Christian Haynes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick63 Rnd2 Max Melton
A reach on Max Melton in pick 63; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick91 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
By-the-book stuff, Brenden Rice at the 91st pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Javon Solomon
A surprising call. With edge rusher and linebacker still to address, they spent No. 94 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick124 Rnd4 McKinnley Jackson
No edge and no loss on McKinnley Jackson in slot 124; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick126 Rnd4 Chau Smith-Wade
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Chau Smith-Wade in pick No. 126 leaves edge rusher and linebacker for later.
Pick131 Rnd4 Isaiah Adams
Isaiah Adams at the 131st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick133 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
They jumped the gun on Luke McCaffrey, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176 Rnd6 Daijun Edwards
Daijun Edwards at Round 6, Pick 1 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick206 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
They paid sticker price for Jared Wiley in No. 206, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick232 Rnd7 Josh Proctor
They paid up for Josh Proctor at pick 232 when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick247 Rnd7 Kedon Slovis
Kedon Slovis at the 247th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
