Draft Grade — Browns
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Browns: B-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Browns did exactly that with Caleb Lomu in the 6th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 6 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 Caleb Lomu
In slot 6 they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick24 Rnd1 Chris Brazzell II
Chris Brazzell II in No. 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick39 Rnd2 Emmanuel Pregnon
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emmanuel Pregnon. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick70 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
They paid sticker price for Malachi Fields in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick107 Rnd4 Eli Raridon
They went early on Eli Raridon in the 107th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick139 Rnd5 Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick 139 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144 Rnd5 Tanner Koziol
By-the-book stuff, Tanner Koziol at slot 144 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick147 Rnd5 Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner in pick No. 147 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick204 Rnd6 Isaac Smith
They liked Isaac Smith enough to skip the value, taking him in the 204th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick248 Rnd7 Preston Hodge
A premium they did not need to pay, Preston Hodge a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
