The Browns did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. Nobody had Tommy Mellott this high, and it is not close. The Browns reached 128 spots to get him at the 257th overall pick. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The back end got a real overhaul.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In pick No. 2 they get an island corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe at pick 33 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67
Rnd3
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in Round 3, Pick 3 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
They did well to land Cam Skattebo in slot 94, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick149
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 149 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick174
Rnd5
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick179
Rnd6
Teddye Buchanan
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Teddye Buchanan. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick192
Rnd6
Brant Kuithe
A big swing on Brant Kuithe at No. 192, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick200
Rnd6
Maxen Hook
A conviction pick on Maxen Hook at pick 200 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick226
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
They took Phil Mafah at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick239
Rnd7
Francisco Mauigoa
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Francisco Mauigoa well ahead of where he belonged. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick255
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III at slot 255 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick257
Rnd7
Tommy Mellott
They talked themselves into Tommy Mellott at the 257th pick, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
