Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B-

FutureA+
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Browns. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Browns took Tommy Mellott a full 130 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mike Green
In the 12th pick they get juice off the edge, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
Jonah Savaiinaea in pick 33 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick45
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson in pick No. 45 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe in slot 67 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
A reach for Gunnar Helm in the 76th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
A big swing on Luke Kandra at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick104
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom at No. 104 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick117
Rnd4
Tai Felton
Tai Felton at the 117th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick151
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in Round 5, Pick 13 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179
Rnd6
Kain Medrano
Kain Medrano at pick 179 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick192
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nazir Stackhouse this early at slot 192. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick200
Rnd6
Bilhal Kone
A wild overpay on Bilhal Kone in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jay Toia
Jay Toia is a better player than the 216th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick232
Rnd7
Brandon Adams
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brandon Adams in pick No. 232, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick255
Rnd7
Tommy Mellott
Tommy Mellott at pick No. 255 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
