JonnyDel DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-

FutureB+
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. Nobody else had Trajan Jeffcoat anywhere near the Round 6 slot. The 49ers did, by 60 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Thrash pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a blindside protector, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick104
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dominick Puni at No. 104. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at the 124th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132
Rnd4
Nehemiah Pritchett
A straight-up fair deal on Nehemiah Pritchett at the 132nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick135
Rnd4
Isaiah Adams
They let Isaiah Adams come to them and pounced at pick No. 135. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jamari Thrash
You do not let a wide receiver like Jamari Thrash reach pick 165 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Sataoa Laumea
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sataoa Laumea in the Round 6 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick211
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand at Round 6, Pick 36 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Trajan Jeffcoat
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trajan Jeffcoat in pick No. 215, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jaden Shirden
Jaden Shirden in the 228th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick248
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman in pick 248 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick251
Rnd7
Ryan Watts
They will replay Ryan Watts at slot 251 for years; that is how good the value is. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
