Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureB+
The Vikings worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Mitchell Melton at No. 231 is 107 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Key falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In the Round 1 slot they get a rangy last line of defense at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 A.J. Harris
A.J. Harris at pick 36 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick56 Rnd2 Eli Stowers
By-the-book stuff, Eli Stowers at pick No. 56 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick157 Rnd5 Xavier Scott
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Scott at slot 157, value and slot in agreement. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick173 Rnd5 Dane Key
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dane Key in the 173rd pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196 Rnd6 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham in Round 6, Pick 20 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick208 Rnd6 J.Michael Sturdivant
They read the board right and J.Michael Sturdivant was the payoff at the 208th pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick231 Rnd7 Mitchell Melton
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mitchell Melton well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
