Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall

FutureB
The Vikings fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+. The real work happened on the phones. The Vikings fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
The Alexander reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The Vikings indulged a want in Abney II while a need in quarterback and edge rusher stayed open. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Abney II pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a lead back with juice at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick47
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at the 47th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick48
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A clean, defensible pick in slot 48 with a little surplus value in Sonny Styles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick74
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
They read the board right and Michael Taaffe was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick97
Rnd3
Julian Neal
They did well to land Julian Neal in pick No. 97, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick99
Rnd3
Keith Abney II
A curious use of the 99th overall pick. Quarterback and edge rusher needed the pick; a cornerback in Keith Abney II did not.
Pick153
Rnd5
Justin Joly
A reasonable price with a little left over, Justin Joly in No. 153. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick169
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
No edge and no loss on Tanner Koziol in pick 169; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick208
Rnd6
Dane Key
Dane Key at the 208th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It fills a real need, too.
Pick213
Rnd6
Drayk Bowen
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Drayk Bowen. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick227
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 227 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Amare Campbell
They paid sticker price for Amare Campbell in pick 237, and that is fine. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick238
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
They jumped the gun on Pat Coogan, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
