Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureC
Grand theft in the 229th pick: the Steelers steal Tuten and grade out a D+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Jamaree Caldwell in the 245th overall pick. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.

Tuten falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In No. 21 they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that.
Pick26 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In slot 26 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick52 Rnd2 Deone Walker
A reach for Deone Walker in Round 2, Pick 20; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick83 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
They let Jayden Higgins come to them and pounced at the 83rd overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick109 Rnd4 TreVeyon Henderson
Somehow TreVeyon Henderson was still sitting there in pick 109, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at the 121st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick161 Rnd5 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey at No. 161 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick162 Rnd5 Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at the 162nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick229 Rnd7 Bhayshul Tuten
They robbed the room for Bhayshul Tuten here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick245 Rnd7 Jamaree Caldwell
Value said wait; Jamaree Caldwell in pick No. 245 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
