Overall B-

The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Ethan Downs, 63 picks early at slot 227. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In No. 11 they get a wrecking ball inside, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in pick No. 43 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
A tidy little value on Carson Schwesinger in Round 3, Pick 11, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick100 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
A reasonable price with a little left over, Darius Alexander in pick 100. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at the 113th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138 Rnd4 Malachi Moore
No edge and no loss on Malachi Moore in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick147 Rnd5 Nick Nash
By-the-book stuff, Nick Nash at the 147th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick160 Rnd5 Oronde Gadsden II
They talked themselves into Oronde Gadsden II at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick227 Rnd7 Ethan Downs
They reached a country mile for Ethan Downs at slot 227, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249 Rnd7 Zeek Biggers
A reach for Zeek Biggers in No. 249; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252 Rnd7 Marcus Yarns
A premium they did not need to pay, Marcus Yarns a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
