Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Saints fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+. The Saints ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The Skattebo pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Neville Gallimore gives the group a proven body among the projects.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup weapon at tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in the 40th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick55
Rnd2
Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer in Round 2, Pick 23 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the 71st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick86
Rnd3
Savion Williams
No edge and no loss on Savion Williams in pick 86; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick93
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalen Milroe. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick112
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke in No. 112 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick117
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
By-the-book stuff, Joshua Farmer at pick No. 117 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick131
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
They paid a round early for Emery Jones Jr. in pick No. 131, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick158
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A straight-up fair deal on Antwaun Powell-Ryland at slot 158, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick184
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
A conviction pick on Oronde Gadsden II at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick248
Rnd7
Ja'Corey Brooks
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Corey Brooks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
The board had cheaper options than Jaylin Smith at the 254th pick, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
