Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
Dart is the plan now, and the Saints grade out a B+. After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Saints committed. Jaxson Dart is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Loveland falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Dart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Jaxson Dart
In the 20th pick they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick40
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
A quiet steal in the 40th overall pick: Jalon Walker for less than the market said. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick45
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland in pick No. 45 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick51
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
A reasonable price with a little left over, Nic Scourton in the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
No drama and no debate, Elic Ayomanor went about where he belonged in No. 71. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
A tidy bit of business in slot 93, where Ozzy Trapilo graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke in pick 112 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick117
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at Round 4, Pick 15 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131
Rnd4
Kyle Williams
They did well to land Kyle Williams in slot 131, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick184
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at Round 6, Pick 8 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick232
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
Bilhal Kone at the 232nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick248
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
They paid up for LaJohntay Wester at No. 248 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254
Rnd7
Dante Trader Jr.
Dante Trader Jr. at pick No. 254 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
