Draft Grade — Saints
Overall

ValueB-

The Saints answered their biggest question with Dart. Grade: B. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Saints spent their marquee pick on Jaxson Dart, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. No fireworks, but a solid B.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bowman Jr.. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Powell-Ryland pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Jaxson Dart
In the 27th pick they get a franchise quarterback, though they paid up to get him.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in Round 2, Pick 10 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick59
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They paid sticker price for Donovan Jackson in pick 59, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Nice patience on Jayden Higgins, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick93
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at slot 93 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick107
Rnd4
Dylan Fairchild
A tidy little value on Dylan Fairchild in No. 107, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112
Rnd4
Tai Felton
Tai Felton in the 112th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Billy Bowman Jr.
They robbed the room for Billy Bowman Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick142
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A wild overpay on Antwaun Powell-Ryland in the 142nd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick183
Rnd6
DJ Giddens
DJ Giddens slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick184
Rnd6
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson at slot 184 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick210
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
Joshua Gray in Round 6, Pick 34 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick248
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at No. 248 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylin Smith a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
