Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
C-
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureC
The Cowboys let Martinez fall and pounced. Final grade: C-. The rest of the league will want that one back. Damien Martinez tumbling to the Cowboys in the 204th overall pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about. A weekend of give and take that grades a C-.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Conner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
Ashton Jeanty at the 12th overall pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick27
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In slot 27 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
A clean, defensible pick in pick 44 with a little surplus value in Benjamin Morrison. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick83
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They paid sticker price for Deone Walker in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick91
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
Cameron Williams at the 91st pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick129
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 129 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
A reach on Jack Kiser in Round 5, Pick 36; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick204
Rnd6
Damien Martinez
Damien Martinez in No. 204 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Howard Cross III
They reached a country mile for Howard Cross III at the 211th pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick217
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson at slot 217 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
They took Jermari Harris at par in No. 239, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick247
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
They left a pile of value on the table to take Hayden Conner this early at the 247th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
