Draft Grade — Steelers

Grand theft in pick No. 178: the Steelers steal Johnson and grade out a B-.

The curious call sets the tone. With safety, edge rusher and other spots still glaring, the Steelers used pick 51 on Zach Frazier, an offensive lineman they were not exactly short of. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want.

They are betting McMillan proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They went 4 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Taliese Fuaga
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
Pick51 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Zach Frazier at offensive lineman with safety, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick84 Rnd3 Andru Phillips
Andru Phillips at pick 84 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick98 Rnd3 Jalen McMillan
They went early on Jalen McMillan in slot 98, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick119 Rnd4 Maason Smith
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Maason Smith at the 119th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick178 Rnd6 Cornelius Johnson
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 178 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick195 Rnd6 Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
