FutureB-
The Raiders bet the future on Mendoza. The board says B-. The Jeff Sims selection is the head-turner. The Raiders reached 135 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Whatever Fernando Mendoza becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
The Nwankpa pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In No. 1 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
They liked Emmanuel Pregnon enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 36. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Derrick Moore
This one needs a full-page explanation: Derrick Moore in the Round 3 slot, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at the 102nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick117
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
CJ Daniels in Round 4, Pick 17 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick134
Rnd4
Kyle Louis
They paid up for Kyle Louis at slot 134 when waiting would have done the job. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick174
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
A quiet steal in pick No. 174: Xavier Nwankpa for less than the market said. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick180
Rnd6
Barion Brown
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Barion Brown well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jordan Hall
Value said wait; Jordan Hall in the 183rd pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick219
Rnd7
Jeff Sims
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jeff Sims this early at the Round 7 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
